THE CODING MOVEMENT
IN ATLANTIC CANADA
1. Take attendance & explain what they'll be doing today (~5 minutes).
2. Introduce/frame the documentary that they're about to watch. It's essentially about how our economy in Atlantic Canada has been on the decline for years now and some people believe that we can use coding as a way to change this and spark economic growth. As the students will see in the documentary, this has already been accomplished in some other places in the world.
Brilliant Labs is mentioned towards the end of the documentary. Perhaps you should pause the video at this point and tell the students that Brilliant Labs is the company that created and hosts the annual Scratch Coding Competition at UNBSJ. It is also the company that recently provided us with our new Razer laptops and our virtual reality setup.
I don't expect ALL students to understand ALL parts of this documentary. However, I think they'll pick up on the main points and I certainly think it's relevant to them and worth 45 minutes of their time. :)

With any time left over, you can either engage in a class discussion or have the students write individual responses on loose leaf. Either way, they should spend a few minutes reflecting on the documentary and stating whether or not they believe that coding can help turn our economy around.
