Recipe for Apple Crisp

Picture
Whenever you see this stop sign, you need to find Mr. Locke and check in with him before continuing.

What You'll Need:
  • Muffin Pan
  • Cooking Spray
  • Apple
  • Apple Slicer
  • Paring Knife
  • Two Bowls
  • White Sugar
  • Brown Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Flour
  • Oats
  • Cold Butter
  • Vanilla Ice Cream
  • Ice Cream Scoop

What You'll Do:
  • Preheat oven to 375°F.

  • Make sure that all group members wash their hands. Use dish detergent as soap.

  • Get a blank camera from the green basket by Mr. Locke's desk. Remember to take a quick video of each major step as you go.

  • Spray the muffin pan wells with the cooking spray and wipe them with a paper towel. You don't need to use very much cooking spray for this; just a little bit goes a long way.

  • Wash the apple at the sink and then dry it with a paper towel.

  • Place the apple on the cutting board and then use the apple slicer to cut it into pieces. Then put the core in the compost bin.

Check in with Mr. Locke and tell him you're ready to cut your apple slices.

  • Use a paring knife to cut the apple slices into even smaller pieces.

  • In one of the bowls, mix the following: 1 tbs white sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, and 1/2 tsp flour.

  • Add the apple slices to this first bowl and then stir them with the rest of the ingredients. This will result in the apple slices being coated with the sugar/cinnamon/flour mixture.

  • After they have been coated with the sugar/cinnamon/flour mixture, divide the apple slices evenly into the muffin pan wells.

  • In a second bowl, mix the following: 3 tbs oats, 2 tbs flour, 2 tbs brown sugar, and 1/4 tsp cinnamon.

Check in with Mr. Locke and tell him you're ready to cut the butter cubes.

  • Get 2 tbs of cold butter from the fridge and then cut it into little cubes.

  • Add the butter to the bowl that has oats. Then use your clean fingers or a fork to mix and mash everything until it's crumbly.

  • When you're happy with the way it looks, you should evenly distribute the crumbly topping over the apples.

Check in with Mr. Locke and tell him you're ready to put your apple crisp in the oven.

  • Bake for 15 minutes (place it on the top rack). Use oven mitts for this. [While waiting for it to bake, clean up whatever you can.]

Check in with Mr. Locke and tell him when it's time to take the apple crisp out of the oven.

  • Using oven mitts, remove from oven and place on stovetop. Turn off oven. Let sit for 3-5 minutes before eating. [Again, you can clean up as you wait.]

  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream if you wish. If you do this, each person gets ONE scoop. Don't forget to return the ice cream to the freezer when you're done scooping.

  • Make sure you finish cleaning up and make sure you return your camera to the pink basket by Mr. Locke's desk.

  • If the bell rings, it doesn't matter; do NOT leave the Tech Room until you're finished cleaning up.
