Assignment

Picture
You should NOT be doing the assignment on this page if you have not yet completed the 'TUTORIALS' section.

Only continue beyond this point if you have completed and passed in BOTH tutorial exercises.

Now that you've completed both of the iMovie tutorial activities and are more comfortable using the program, you are ready to start working on your assignment for this module.

For this assignment, you need to create a Commercial for a real or fake product of your choice.

Before you start anything (filming or planning), make sure that you read EVERYTHING on this page. There are a few important rules and guidelines that you absolutely need to be aware of.

Filming Scenes At School vs. Filming Scenes On Your Own Time
You may use one of our school cameras to shoot your footage. However, if you choose to do it this way, you will be restricted to filming in the HALLWAY JUST OUTSIDE THE TECH ROOM. You cannot film anywhere else in the school. Also, only ONE CLASSMATE AT A TIME will be permitted to leave the room to help you or to co-star in the video. Therefore, if you require several people to appear in your video, you will need to use them one at a time and you'll need to plan/write your idea with this in mind. In other words, Mr. Locke isn't going to let three or four people leave the Tech room at the same time to work on your video.

Seriously. If you take out more than one person at a time, it will affect your mark because it means you're not following the instructions that you were given.

However, you can also choose to use your own video camera or Smartphone and film the video on your own time. If you do it this way, you will not be faced with the same restrictions. Instead, you'll be able to shoot the video wherever you like and you'll be able to have as many friends help you as you want. Then, when you're finished filming, you can bring your footage into the Tech room and use iMovie to edit it. If you select this option, be sure to bring any cords that you may need in order to copy the videos from your camera/phone to the computer.

So, those are your two options. Either one will be fine; the choice is yours.

The Importance of Planning
Before you begin shooting any actual video for your assignment, you need to carefully and thoughtfully plan what you want to do. The students who take the time to do this ALWAYS end up producing better quality videos than the students who do not.
Watch the video on the right to learn about storyboarding. Then, if you would like to create a storyboard for your movie, ask Mr. Locke for a storyboard sheet. Here's an example of a finished storyboard:
You may also choose to write a script instead.

Either way, you will need to show Mr. Locke that you have planned your ideas and know exactly what you are going to do. ONLY THEN then will you be allowed to actually start shooting things with a video camera.

Other Guidelines
After carefully planning your ideas, you will use a video camera to get the videos that you need and then you will use iMovie to actually edit and create your commercial. Be sure that you follow these guidelines:
  1. The commercial needs to have music (however, the music shouldn't play throughout the entire thing; it can just play for a small portion or two of it).
  2. The commercial needs to be between 45 and 60 seconds long. Seriously. No shorter than 45 seconds and no longer than 1 minute. You will lose marks if the length of your video is outside of this range. Sometimes, when you're making videos, it's very important to be this precise.
  3. Your finished commercial must consist of more than just one or two scenes. In other words, you shouldn't just film one or two scenes and then use that as your commercial. Instead, you need to film multiple scenes and then you can use some parts and discard others when you use iMovie to do the actual editing. If you have any questions about what this means, please ask.
  4. Everything else is up to you!

When you have finished your assignment, be sure to check it over carefully and make sure that you have followed all of the instructions.

Then, you should place the .m4v file in the Dropbox and let Mr. Locke know which unit you wish to begin next.
